When the institutionalization of modernism began in the mid-19th century, daily life and non-working times were redefined along with the working space and production activities. In this context, leisure activities became a phenomenon within the scope of the culture industry in the 20th century. Cinema, as a product of modernism, emerged in cities as one of the most important technological developments of the 20th century, and is an art form and mass media, along with being a leisure activity. For this reason, it is important to examine both the cinema-society relationship and the free time and ideological background determined by modernism. Since the event where the Lumière brothers screened their first film in the world, cinema has witnessed the rapid urbanization of society and social transformations in parallel, as well as contributing to its transformation by attracting the attention of the society. The aim of this study is to examine the historical transformations of cinema and society based on the literature review on the subject, to reveal the cinema-society interaction and the change in entertainment habits in society.
