Abstract

Shopping centers (shopping malls) are the areas that contribute greatly to the economy and employment in their region. The number of shopping centers that are located the development, growth and economic strategies of Turkey, is increasing day by day. Shopping malls are in high demand by consumers. The development of shopping centers over time as an important recreational activity areas, increasing of visitors and their economic value are tried to be explained by the analysis of secondary data. For this purpose, literature review was conducted and development process of shopping areas, recreational shopping and recreational activities in shopping centers in Turkey were investigated. According to the findings, the allround opportunities provided by shopping centers to the regional economy have been revealed. Shopping malls, which are among the most important elements of urbanization, are recreational areas that offer different social and cultural opportunities to visitors as well as shopping services. Therefore, in a competitive environment, retailers and shopping center management should determine the factors that are important for consumers’ shopping center preferences and develop projects that will make a difference.
