Abstract

Although many studies regarding the spatial clustering, distribution and extension of tourists in countries with developed tourism, no studies are available regarding the spatial association of international tourism demand in Turkey. The objective of this study is to manifest whether there is a spatial cluster association according to districts where foreign tourists have been accommodated between the years 2000 and 2015 in Turkey. First the accommodation numbers of foreign tourists were mapped according to districts with spatial distribution by using the ArcGIS 10.2.2. program after which the results were assessed with spatial cluster analysis (Standard Deviation Ellipse, Moran’s I, LISA). According to the analysis results the weighted centers of accommodated foreign tourist demands trends southerly (especially Antalya) and there is a medium level positive spatial auto-correlation in the distribution of accommodation numbers. According to these findings a significant spatial clustering of foreign tourists is manifested in the districts of Istanbul and Antalya. However, the degree of functionality and efficiency in terms of structural, legal and organizational issues in these regions with spatial clustering is debatable.
